What does feels like temperature actually mean?
Feels like temperature represents what the air feels like to our bodies in 2 ways, wind chill and heat index.
Wind chill (mostly used during the winter or in colder climates) is based off of the actual temperature and wind speed. As our bodies release heat we cool down and stronger winds cause a faster release of heat and we become colder faster. (Humidity and sunlight don’t factor into wind chill). Heat index (mostly used during the summer or in warmer climates) is based off of the actual temperature and humidity. As our bodies produce sweat we cool down when the sweat evaporates. When humidity is high, the environment doesn’t allow as much evaporation so heat builds in our body and we feel hotter. Heat index doesn’t factor in sunlight so the air can actually feel up to 15 degrees warmer than the heat index shows.
